The Clean Energy Solutions Center, in partnership with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group and the U.S. Department of Energy, hosted this webinar on energy sector resilience.
Our energy infrastructure faces multiple natural and man-made threats, including short-term extreme weather events, long-term climate trends, cyber and physical attacks and other hazards. Reducing vulnerabilities from and increasing resilience to these diverse threats will be critical to minimizing the economic losses from energy service interruptions that are estimated to cost tens of billions of dollars per year in the United States alone.
The webinar began with an introduction to the concept of resilience and how it applies to the energy sector. Panelists then discussed why resilience is a growing concern and what tools are available to assess energy sector vulnerabilities and resilience options. The panelists showed several examples of recent resilience studies conducted in different regions in the United States, and they discussed how the studies apply to other regions in the world.
Presentations were followed by an interactive question and answer session with the audience.

Stephen M. Folga
Dr. Stephen M. Folga is a senior manager in the Risk and Infrastructure Science Center at Argonne National Laboratory. He has been involved for more than 15 years in projects related to infrastructure assurance. During that time, he contributed to the development of systems analysis methodologies to use in natural gas and petroleum fuels infrastructure assessments. He also developed methodologies for estimating the potential consequences of component disruption and the time needed to return disrupted components into service. Dr. Folga has helped to determine the interdependencies between the natural gas and petroleum infrastructures with other critical energy infrastructures, such as electric power and telecommunications.
Guenter Conzelmann
Guenter Conzelmann is the Director of the Center for Energy, Environmental, and Economic Systems Analysis at Argonne National Laboratory. He is a Senior Fellow with the Energy Policy Institute at Chicago/University of Chicago as well as with the Northwestern University’s NAISE Institute and an Adjunct Faculty with the Stuart School of Business at the Illinois Institute of Technology. His research focuses on the development and application of modeling and simulation tools to study strategic energy and power sector issues, including renewable energy integration, smart grid and microgrid implementation, advanced grid modeling, energy sector resilience, and environmental impacts of energy production.
