About 90% of refugees living in camps have no access to electricity and many lack any form of lighting at night, says a Chatham House report for the Moving Energy Initiative. Energy poverty in refugee settlements is not on the radar of international initiatives and humanitarian agencies are ill-equipped to deal with the scale of need. Now, a new report—Heat Light and Power for Refugees: Saving Lives, Reducing Costs—zooms in on the energy needs of refugees and displaced people worldwide, and it presents the first ever estimates of the volume and costs of what they use. The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) is now welcoming applications for a fourth round of funding to support renewable energy projects in developing countries. The funding round of approximately USD 50 million is part of a USD 350 million (AED 1.285 billion) commitment by ADFD to provide concessional loans to projects endorsed by IRENA over seven funding cycles. According to a new report released today by IRENA, Germany is on track to realising its 2030 renewable energy targets. Renewable Energy Prospects Germany finds Germany has the potential to further increase the amount of renewable power sourced from solar photovoltaics and wind and achieve significantly higher shares of renewables in the end-use sectors. Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) has launched a new film, website and social media campaign showing how energy poverty costs millions of lives every year, particularly among women and children. The campaign is a call to action on clean cooking and lighting solutions and electrification of health facilities, raising awareness of the issues and highlighting the work being done by SE4All’s partners on the ground. Sustainable Energy for All is deepening its collaboration with Japan, which hosts the SE4All Energy Efficiency Facilitation Hub in the Energy Conservation Centre Japan. Three major SE4All outreach events were held in the country in late October—one hosted in Tokyo by the Hub and Japanese government, and two by Toyama city—focusing on energy efficiency and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 7 on energy.
