Transcript—Webinar audio transcript
The Clean Energy Solutions Center, in partnership with the United Nations (UN) Foundation’s Energy Access Practitioner Network, offered this no-cost online webinar highlighting the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) work on renewable energy standards and its recent commitment to the UN Secretary General’s Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) initiative. The IEC offered three packages of standards pertaining to rural electrification at a discounted price for qualifying practitioners to facilitate access to sustainable energy standards for stakeholders in developing countries.
The webinar explored the importance of global quality standards as a means of consumer protection and ways to reduce the barriers that practitioners traditionally face in having to obtain the standards at a high cost. It also provided information for practitioners, small and medium enterprises regarding the:
- IEC’s general procedures as a standards-making body
- New 62257 series of standards and their relevance to energy access, including but not limited to the new solar lantern standard
- Nature of the discounts and details of the standards that will be offered in the package
- How qualifying practitioners will be able to access the discounted packages, including a further discount offered by the International Finance Corporation.
Panelists
Francisco Boshell, Analyst, International Renewable Energy Agency
Francisco Boshell is an analyst in markets and standards for renewable energy technologies at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). He supports IRENA’s activities aimed at promoting strong and growing markets for renewables through a wider use of standards and quality assurance mechanisms. His background is in mechanical engineering and he holds a MSc. in Sustainable Energy Technology from the Eindhoven University of Technology, in the Netherlands. During his career, Mr. Boshell has developed technical standards for quantifying GHG emission reductions from CDM projects as an officer at UNFCCC; supported the climate change negotiations under UNFCCC; provided consultancy services for the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in Latin America at KEMA Consulting; and designed and implemented infrastructure and energy related projects in the automotive manufacturing sector.
Guilaine Fournet, Head of Sales & Business Development, Electrotechnical Commission
