According to a proposal by European Parliament member, the European Union should boost an innovation fund under its emissions cap-and-trade program in the next decade to help companies embrace clean energy technologies. The lawmakers aim to top EUR 400 million allowances proposed by the European Commission for the innovation fund with EUR 150 million in unallocated allowances.

Energy sector enterprises are planning to launch Masala Bonds worth USD 1 billion in the UK to fund renewable energy projects in India. As India gears up to meet its ambitious renewable energy targets of 175 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2022, the country is exploring international mechanisms of funding and is evaluating new and innovative tools to finance the renewables sector.

The New Development Bank, a multilateral lender formerly known as the BRICS Development Bank, will provide $811 million in a first round of loans for clean energy projects in four nations. Brazil, China, India and South Africa have received energy credits and green energy loans are a core focus. The loans will run 12 to 20 years.

San Antonio-based OCI Solar Power has its first project in Mexico through a solar farm partially financed by North American Development Bank, which fulfills a promise to create new business in 2016. A 13.6-megawatt solar farm was originally developed by San Antonio-based clean energy company Buenavista Renewables, which secured $40 million in financing from the San Antonio-based NADBank and the Washington, D.C.-based Overseas Private Investment Corporation.

The U.S. Clean Energy Education & Empowerment (C3E) program, part of the Clean Energy Ministerial’s C3E initiative, recently hosted its annual retreat for the U.S. C3E Ambassadors—a group of 38 distinguished executive-level leaders in clean energy who work to advance women’s participation and leadership in the sector. The event was hosted at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. The 2016 C3E Women in Clean Energy Symposium will be held at Stanford University on May 31 as a side event to the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial.

Energy officials from the 21 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies have endorsed a new global target for deploying 10 billion high-efficiency lighting products. The goal of the target is to boost trade and green growth in the world’s most populous region. The Global Lighting Challenge was introduced during the COP21 climate talks in Paris last December. It builds on complementary, market-based measures being advanced by APEC economies to reduce their energy intensity by 45% by 2035 and lower their carbon emissions to fight climate change. Energy officials and experts will convene next week in Taichung City to accelerate work toward this energy intensity reduction goal.
