Developing a Low-Carbon Economy
Reducing emissions in power generation and industrial processes while ensuring energy security, resilience and reliability through energy diversity

The CCUS initiative was launched at the 9th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM9) meeting in May 2018. It strengthens the framework for public-private collaboration on CCUS while complementing the efforts of existing organizations and initiatives working in this area, such as the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum (CSLF), International Energy Agency (IEA), IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEAGHG), Mission Innovation (MI) and Global CCS Institute (GCCSI).

Key activities include:

• Expanding the spectrum of clean energy technologies under CEM to include CCUS
• Creating a sustained platform for the private sector, governments and the investment community to engage and accelerate CCUS deployment
• Facilitating the identification of both near- and longer-term investment opportunities to improve the business case for CCUS
• Disseminating emerging policy, regulatory and investment best practices on CCUS as part of integrated clean energy systems.

CCUS Initiative Governance

CCUS is an initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM), a global forum to share best practices and promote policies and programs that encourage and facilitate the transition to a global clean energy economy.

The United States, Norway and Saudi Arabia colead the CCUS initiative with support from partner countries, including Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, South Africa, United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
