Developing economies often have lower levels of financial flows and per capital income; there may be fewer private sector players and more monopolies. Similarly the state may play a bigger role in running enterprises, and there are likely to be greater systemic risks, such as extreme fluctuations in currency values. Foreign direct investment may be possible in some sectors and driven in part by the legal institutions securing protection of private property, trademarks, intellectual property, and other considerations.
