The Clean Energy Solutions Center, in partnership with International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN), hosted this webinar on the Jeju Island Smart Grid Project.
In June 2009, the South Korean government selected Jeju Island as the site for the construction of a smart grid test-bed with a budget of approximately $200 million. This test-bed has become one of the world’s largest smart grid communities that allows for the testing of advanced smart grid technologies and R&D results, as well as the development of business models.
The Jeju Island Smart Grid Project serves as the foundation for the commercialization and industrial export of smart grid technologies. It is expected to greatly contribute to strengthening Korea’s position as a leader in the global smart grid industry.
This project was conducted with the participation of the Korean government, Korea Smart Grid Institute (KSGI), KEPCO, KT (Korea Telecom), the Jeju Special Autonomous Province, companies joining the complex, Korea Smart Grid Association, research institutes, and academia. About 10 consortiums in five areas participated in testing technologies and developing business models.
The vision and goals of the Jeju Island Smart Grid Project state a commitment to developing a low carbon, green growth strategy. From the national standpoint, this project aims to raise energy efficiency and implement green-energy infrastructure by building eco-friendly infrastructure that reduces CO2 emissions. From the industrial standpoint, this project seeks to secure a new growth engine that will drive Korea in the age of green growth. And, from an individual standpoint, this project is headed for low carbon and green life by enhancing quality of life through experiences of and participation in a low carbon, green life.

Bruce Lee, Deputy Secretary General, International Smart Grid Action Network
Bruce Lee has been Deputy Secretary General of the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN) since 2012, dealing with smart grid and renewable energy projects that are related with global climate change. He manages all affairs, including project-related, financial issues and other operational management issues in ISGAN Secretariat. Prior to joining ISGAN, he served as a country head of Korea for Oracle Financial Services Software (incorporated in Singapore), worked for a global financial solution vendor for six years, and successfully managed several big financial management and anti-money laundering application projects in Korea as well as in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan. He also had a career in international financial institutes more than 15 years, specializing in business operation, financial risk management and fund mobilization areas. He was also a researcher at Korea Eximbank. Bruce holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese Literature from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
Hyungsoo Kim, Korea Telecom
Hyungsoo Kim has worked at KT (Korea Telecom) R&D part since 1993. He had successfully led outstanding projects in relation to B-ISDN (broadband-integrated digital network), NGN (next generation network), IP QoS (quality of service), green ICT (Information and communications technology) and the Smart Grid field trial in Jeju Island. He is now responsible for leading the business and the technical strategies for Smart Grid and K-MEG (Korea-Micro Energy Grid), as a Director of Smart Grid Department in KT. Hyungsoo has a Ph.D. in electronics engineering from Kon-Kuk University. In addition to his role in KT, he has participated in ITU-T based international standards activities since 1997. And, now he is working as a vice-chairman for ITU-T Study Group 12 and ITU-T Focus Group on Smart Grid.
