Energy ministers and other senior officials recognized recent progress to scale up renewable energy and examined opportunities for even greater action today on the sidelines of the G20 Energy Ministers meeting in Beijing. Before the start of the official meeting, participants joined the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to take stock of work completed under the G20 Toolkit of Voluntary Options for Renewable Energy Deployment, adopted last year at the first-ever G20 Energy Ministers meeting in Istanbul. The share of global electricity generated by solar photovoltaics could increase from 2 per cent today to as much as 13 per cent by 2030, according to a new report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Letting in the Light: How Solar Photovoltaics Will Revolutionize the Electricity System finds the solar industry is poised for massive expansion, driven primarily by cost reductions. It estimates that solar PV capacity could reach between 1,760 and 2,500 gigawatts (GW) by 2030, up from 227 GW today. Learn more.

Leaders in energy, finance and law will collaborate to scale up solar energy under a new initiative officially launched today on the margins of InterSolar Europe. The Solar Energy Standardisation Initiative, led by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Terrawatt Initiative, aims to spur global solar development by standardising contracts to streamline the development and finance of solar projects. The average costs for electricity generated by solar and wind technologies could decrease by between 26 and 59 per cent by 2025, according to a report released today by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The authors of the report, The Power to Change: Solar and Wind Cost Reduction Potential to 2025, find that with the right regulatory and policy frameworks in place, solar and wind technologies can continue to realise cost reductions to 2025 and beyond. Their meeting included discussion of common climate and clean energy interests. The International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) Technical Collaboration Programmes (TCPs), formerly known as Implementing Agreements, help IEA enable results-orientated multi-lateral cooperation. IEA’s new report, Technology Collaboration Programmes: Highlights and outcomes is a collection of the significant recent outcomes of the 39 TCPs operating today.
