The Clean Energy Solutions Center, in partnership with the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN), hosted this webinar on the Grid4EU Project. Designed in response to a call for projects from the European Commission under FP7 program, the Grid4EU project lays the groundwork for the development of tomorrow's electricity grids. Grid4EU will test the potential of smart grids in areas such as renewable energy integration, grid automation, energy storage, energy efficiency, active demand and load reduction.
Coordinated by Électricité Réseau Distribution France (ERDF) and drawing on the expertise of six distribution system operators (ERDF, Enel Distribuzione, Iberdrola, CEZ Distribuce, Vattenfall Eldistribution and Rheinisch-Westfälisches Elektrizitätswerk), and some 27 industrial and scientific centers of excellence, universities, and technology manufacturers, Grid4EU is the largest smart grids project cofounded by the European Union. Grid4EU consists of six demonstrators, which will be tested over four years in each of the European countries represented in the consortium. The emphasis will be on fostering complementarity among these projects and on promoting transversal research and results sharing among the different energy distributors involved.

Rémy Garaude Verdier, Smart Grids Project Manager, Électricité Réseau Distribution France
Rémy Garaude Verdier is a Smart Grids Project Manager within ERDF’s strategy and project development department. Since 2011, Rémy is GRID4EU’s Project Coordinator. Previously, Rémy has worked in a variety of jobs during a 10-year career at EDF Group. His previous roles include managing the integration of the EDF Group’s SAP solution to its new nuclear build division in the UK and the US, and managing the purchase and engineering domains in the biggest SAP deployment completed to date (more than 80,000 users). Prior to joining EDF Group, Rémy managed several large construction projects around the world for VINCI Group. He is a civil engineer with an MBA from Lausanne IMD (Switzerland).
Lilia Consiglio, Smart Grids Expert, ENEL Distribuzione “Network Technologies”
Lilia Consiglio is a smart grids expert within ENEL Distribuzione “Network Technologies” area, and she is GRID4EU’s Technical Director. Lilia joined ENEL in 1992 and participated in the first ENEL Smart Meters Project, based on power line carrier over MV and LV network. She has been working in the field of Remote Control and Distribution Automation Systems since 1996. She was involved in most of the technical activities to develop Central systems and peripheral units for remote control of ENEL HV/MV and MV/LV substations and in the definition of algorithms for automatic fault detection and restoration along MV network, presently adopted in ENEL. Lilia holds a degree in Electronic Engineering from “La Sapienza” University of Rome.
Janusz Bialek, DONG Energy Chair of Renewable Energy, Durham University
Professor Janusz Bialek (FIEEE) was born and educated in Poland. Currently he holds the DONG Energy Chair of Renewable Energy at Durham University, previously (2003-2009) holding the Chair of Electrical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh. He will be the Technical Chair of Probabilistic Methods Applied to Power Systems (PMAPS) conference to be held in Durham in 2014. Janusz has widely published on technical and economic integration of renewable generation in the power system, smart grids, preventing electricity blackouts and power system dynamics. He has been has been the Principal Investigator of a number of major research grants funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and industry. He has also been a consultant to the UK government, Scottish Government, European Commission, International Energy Agency, Elexon, Polish Power Grid Company, Scottish Power and Enron. Janusz is monitoring, on behalf of the European Commission, a number of EC-funded projects, including GRID4EU.
Matthieu Craye, Policy Officer, European Commission Directorate-General for Energy
Since 2009, Matthieu Craye has been with the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy, dealing with renewable energy and smart grid technologies. He manages energy RTD programmes and follows large scale EC-funded demonstration projects, in particular in offshore wind technology and in smart transmission and distribution electricity systems. He is the EC's representative to the International Smart Grid Action Network. Previously, he was a researcher at the European Commission's Joint Research Centre and worked in industry and academia. He holds a master's degree in energy engineering and followed postgraduate education in economics and philosophy.
