The World Bank Group’s Energy Practice has launched Live Wire, a series of “concise knowledge note” that are available on the Energy Portal and through the Open Knowledge Repository of the World Bank Group. Each issue of Live Wire—which will to be produced and peer-reviewed by energy experts on a monthly basis—will focus on issues facing front-line energy development practitioners.

A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions to 40% below the 1990 level, an EU-wide binding target for renewable energy of at least 27%, renewed ambitions for energy efficiency policies, a new governance system and a set of new indicators to ensure a competitive and secure energy system. These are the pillars of the new EU framework on climate and energy for 2030 recently presented by the European Commission.

In a briefing prepared for the Clean Energy Solutions Center, Bloomberg New Energy Finance reports that the global clean energy sector finished 2013 near or at parity with conventional fossil sources in more locations than ever. Yet the next wave of market penetration is proving to be uneven, as some national governments reduce their financial support for the sector.
