The findings in the 2012 GSR speak to the cumulating effect of steady growth in renewable energy markets, support policies and investment over the past years.

On World Environment Day, Johnson Controls, launched Driving Transformation to Energy Efficient Buildings: Policies and Actions. This tool kit is designed to help the estimated 6.5 billion people who will live and work in urban buildings by 2050 breath cleaner air, be more comfortable, save money, and reduce carbon emissions.

In Abu Dhabi, Paris, Davos, and New Delhi, the Clean Energy Solutions Center recently presented preliminary results of a high renewable energy penetration analysis that we developed in partnership with several international organizations and governments. The study focuses on best practices and case study comparisons from Australia, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the United States. The resulting report and its companion summary for policymakers synthesizes lessons on effective policies, regulations, planning, and practices for achieving and managing significant renewable energy penetration into large-scale electricity grid systems.

A new report from the Institute for Industrial Productivity describes the policy packages of six countries—China, India, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States—that directly or indirectly affect industrial energy efficiency or greenhouse gas emissions. The report, Ten Key Messages for Effective Policy Packages: Sharing Best Practices in Industrial Energy Efficiency Policies, proposes that an effective policy approach requires a "policy pyramid" consisting of three policy levels.

Parts of the developing world must increase investments to at least five times current levels in order to provide universal energy access by 2030 according to a recent United Nations' report titled Informing the Financing of Universal Energy Access: An Assessment of Current Flows. The study finds that in countries like Kenya, where less than 20% of the population has access to grid-based energy, increased investments in energy have less of an effect on the energy poor due to high costs. The findings of the report also show that there is a downward tendency in energy related foreign direct investment into developing countries in recent years.
