16 June 2015
As part of the 2015 Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF) a team from the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale (GIZ) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) provided a training workshop on 16 June in Manila, focused on variable renewable energy (vRE) grid integration. The training covered a variety of topics, including key issues and challenges, enabling policy solutions, and investment mobilization, and the workshop was attend by over 120 participants. A detailed summary document is coming soon.
Key Lessons Learned
- High RE penetration is technical possible, challenges are economic and institutional, regulation need to keep pace with technology and market developments
- Develop a vision of how the grid and the energy system shall look in the future and plan accordingly so that transmission and distribution utilities can lay down the tracks and financing can be secured
- Location and timing of future vRE installations need to be matched with transmission and generation planning and market and regulatory design
- Flexible system operation can be achieved through more flexible scheduling and dispatch schemes as well as accurate forecasting, potentially avoiding investments in additional flexible generation resources
- As forecasting is essential, the specific responsibilities of each entity need to be clarified
- Get your own experience and learn from your neighbors
