The African continent could generate nearly a quarter of its energy needs through the use of indigenous renewable energy by 2030, according to a new report by the International Renewable Energy Agency. Africa 2030—a roadmap for Africa’s energy transition—finds that a combination of modern renewable technology could realistically meet 22% cent of Africa’s energy needs by 2030.

Energy ministers from the G20 countries and heads of international organizations affirmed their commitment to renewable energy at the first-ever G20 Energy Ministers Meeting in Istanbul today. The high-level participants endorsed an 11-point communiqué, including the adoption of a renewable energy toolkit, which provides options for G20 countries to take a long-term, integrated and sustainable approach towards enhanced deployment of renewable energy.

The Ministry of Energy of Chile has presented its Energy Roadmap 2050, which focuses on low-emissions, competitiveness and sustainable costs. It proposes that at least 70% of the electricity fed into the grid come from renewable sources by 2050.

The Ministry of Energy of Lithuania has revised and submitted to the government the draft Renewable Energy Resources Development Programme for 2016–2020. According to this draft programme, installed wind capacity should increase by another 250 MW (500 MW are already planned). The Ministry will seek to promote wind power while not increasing electricity tariffs.
